Most European countries do not allow you to tow a vehicle with another vehicle, so you are require (by law) to arrange a tow truck to remove it, and take it to a garage of your choice. In the event of serious irreparable damage, their will be some insurance compensation for the use of a hotel, meals etc.

If your vehicle is severely damaged, they will also arrange, if you have the breakdown recovery insurance, to have the vehicle towed to safety, and arrange transport for you to get home, by plane, train or taxi. If you had to pay for a tow truck to remove your Motor home, bearing in mind it will not be the standard tow truck as they are often not rated high enough to tow camper vans or Motor homes, you will be in for a big bill. If you are four persons traveling and your in Germany when this happen, you would also have the costs of transport back home and then deciding on how to recover and pay for the return of your Motor home.

There are hundreds of official parks for motor homes to stay at in Portugal and they are not easy to find. A quick search online will provide you with a host of options, from free parking to sites with all the facilities you could need. MOTOR HOME AND CAMPER VAN RULES IN PORTUGAL.

Other than the normal driving regulations that apply to most European countries about having reflective jackets, driving on the right hand side, the rules are pretty straight forward. It is forbidden to park an RV, Motorhome or Camper Van in a public parking area overnight. You must only park overnight in designated areas such as camp sites. (This has never made any sense, as a motorhome is meant to be able to be driven and parked wherever one likes - maybe they will change the rules but don't hold your breath).

Other than that it is a case of being sensible and responsible, keep the noise down, don't empty tanks anywhere other than specific authorized areas, park sensibly and don't get into arguments with the locals.
