DENTAL INSURANCE COVER IN PORTUGAL.

Making the decision to go private with Dental insurance will cover you for most types of dental services, including annual check-ups or bi-annual check ups, and an unlimited number of visits. Extractions and some orthodontics. Basic treatment and follow-up appointments are covered,. 

However, it doesn't cover for such things as surgeries, implants, false teeth and items that may be classified as cosmetic. Dentists in Portugal are much cheaper than in most European Countries. This is because wages in Portugal tend to be lower and it is one of the poorer European Countries, hence it is proving to be a popular destination for Expats.

DENTAL TREATMENTS ON THE PORTUGUESE NATIONAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM.

Dental treatment is not freely available on the Portuguese National Health System, you will have to pay for it  unless you have private dental insurance that covers the treatment you require. Children and the elderly are exempt and they can get most treatments for free. 

Although Portugal has a large number of Dentists, higher than the European average per capita, many lack dental oral hygiene because of the costs involved. The SNS, Servico National de Saude, subsidise check ups and examinations and is free to residents that are registered with the State Healthcare System.

CAN I USE MY EHIC CARD IN PORTUGAL FOR DENTAL TREATMENT?

Your European Health Insurance Card is designed for Expats to use when in a foreign country for emergency medical treatment, within that countries National Health System. If you have an emergency situation with tooth ache or require an extraction, need emergency medical treatment for an accident or injury, they will accept your EHIC as a visitor or tourist. It will not cover you for any standard treatments like cleaning, scaling and polishing. The EHIC card is purely designed to provide you with emergency medical treatment only, and they will treat you so that you are able to return home to complete or carry out any additional treatment needed.

GETTING SPECIALISED DENTAL TREATMENTS IN PORTUGAL.  

Portugal is becoming a tourist Mecca for dental treatments, particularly in Lisbon. With dental costs rising dramatically in America and the EU, including the UK, now out of the EU, many will travel to Portugal for Private Dental treatment. Oral Hygiene and dental awareness are far more prevalent in other European countries and people searching for extensive or life changing dental treatments are looking at Portuguese dentists for this work.  Veneers, aesthetic restorations and dental implants are high on this list.  

FINDING A DENTIST IN PORTUGAL.

Finding an English speaking dentist is not difficult, they can be found online and in the Portuguese yellow pages , searching the internet for a dentist, or asking friends for a recommendation. Some Dentists use Facebook rather than websites to provide local details of dentists in or around your area. 

Based on your internet IP address, a search for Dentists near me, will provide you with dentists near your location. There are many English Dentists that have moved to Portugal and set up their own practices, particularly in Lisbon and in the Algarve. They might be a little bit more expensive than Portuguese dentists, but at least you will have the peace of mind that you are dealing with a dentist that you can completely understand and nothing is likely to get lost in translation.

DENTAL INSURANCE FOR EXPATS IN PORTUGAL IN ENGLISH.

Family dental care insurance policies are also available and there are considerable reductions for some of the family dental plans. Protecting your children with regular dental check ups and visits will keep their oral hygiene in check and protect them from unwanted fillings and dental work.
